The tachi is an earlier form of Japanese sword used mainly by the cavalry which were predominant fighting units. Tachi was eventually replaced by the katana. The design of tachi is said to be more curved and usually longer than that of katana at 30.7 in. in blade length. This design was made to enhance the force of downward swing by a warrior mounted on horseback. These swords was equipped with the edge down, hung from the obi, or sash, over the left hip unlike the katana which are equipped with the edge up.
Kodachi denotes a tachi which is shorter in length. The E-mudo kodachi is forge-folded with high quality steel resulting with blade length of 29 in. and tsuka length of 9.4 in. This kodachi features a beautiful saya with a bronze cap at the tip. The tsuka also features the bronze cap at the end, and the same is made from genuine ray skin wrapped with tightly-woven Japanese silk.
