When the wakizashi accompanies a katana, the pair is called a daisho. The wakizashi is a sidearm that was kept by a samurai at all times¤Ô¤³¤Ê¤«t his bedside and in places where katana were disallowed. The production of each E-mudo Shinzui Wakizashi is a time consuming process since each is forged in the Nihonto tradition by a E-mudo bladesmith. Using tamahagane steel, our smith forge-folds the billet 8-10 times producing a natural, active hada, while removing metal impurities and air. This is the traditional method and material used by Japanese bladesmiths that produces natural hada and swords of the quality associated with traditional weapons. Yaki-ire is the subsequent hardening process where the folded metal is covered in clay, leaving the cutting edge exposed before cooling to harden the edge into martensite; the clay border creates a natural gunome and notare hamon, which is later refined by the E-mudo togishi in the shitaji and shiage polishing process. Features of the E-mudo Shinzui Katana koshirae are ray skin on the tsuka with a tightly-woven silk wrap (tsuka-ito) and an historical kijuuki, crane, motif.
